POLiTiCS AND THE BLACK VOTE: MAYA ANGELOU SPEAKS
After hearing this clip from Maya Angelou below, I have to consider whether we as African-Americans/Black People are simply attempting to switch roles with White America. Are we simply voting for Barack Obama because he looks like us? Or becuase he doesn't look like "them?" I must admit I have heard people say this. Many seem to indicate that since Obama may be the first electable Black candidate, that we should get behind him because we may never get this chance again. In this respect, we could be making a big mistake, because we would be doing to Whites what we have complained for many centuries about them doing to us. Are we living the "eye for an eye" philosophy? Is that only fair considering what we have endured? What would Dr. King say? Are we not supposed to be judging based on the content of a person's character? I implore all who may read this to take the time and make the effort to actually look at the proposed policy changes that each candidate offers before getting behind one. As Ms. Angelou says, "we are all alike" in more ways that we often realize. We want the same things. Let's not trade places with those who have wronged us.
