B.O.B. - KEEP YOUR HEAD TO THE SKY (Part 2)
...continued from PART 1
Being in DeKalb, County, what did you personally think of former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney? She endured much for her slapping of a capitol police officer, but few remember that she was the first official to come forward and state that the President and his Administration were fore-warned about September 11th.
I respect Cynthia McKinney. To have fame and to be known means you have to live your life under a microscope. She doesn’t get the respect she deserves for what she did.
So you are signed to Atlantic Records and in your bio you state that you are looking to create a debut album that can go diamond (move 10 million units). That is quite a goal to set for yourself! How do you plan to accomplish this?
I set a huge goal for myself to dare myself and those around me like people working on my project to achieve and prove the haters wrong. I am the type of person that likes to do what people say I can’t do. I like the challenge.
How often do you run across other Decatur, GA artists like Lloyd? Do you all feel an extra sense of loyalty to one another, coming from the same part of town?
I feel a strong sense of loyalty. In fact, I wanna do a Legion of Doom EASTSIDE mixtape to pay homage to the East and address the lack of respect the Eastside has gotten. Everyone is always from the Westside and Bankhead but the Eastside is on the map, too.
To be a young recording artist (17, right? When is your birthday?), you find that you are expected to make music for the kids as well as for the adults. When you work on subject matter for a song, how do you walk that line?
Well, I turned 18 on November 15th last year (2006). I have always been a deep-thinking dude. I’ve always been the youngest dude and in high school. I have always been the youngest in my crew and I am still a kid myself. So I guess I have never really had that problem.
With your experience producing and arranging vocals, you have an ability to look at a song from all angles, from an artists standpoint, a producers, etc. I read an interview with Beyonce where she stated that because of this, she prefers Swizz Beats’ tracks, because there is only a beat/rhythm on the track and no melodies, so she gets to add the melody and arrange the vocals how she sees fit. Do you begin your tracks with a beat and go from there, or does it start with wherever the idea takes you?
Well, I don’t want to just rap on my beats because I feel that it limits me as an artist. I try to follow the vibe of the idea that is going around in the studio. If the beat comes first, then so be it. Sometimes I will record the vocals first. I let the music take me wherever it takes me. A lot of times with studio sessions so many people are in the room like 15 of ‘em and that is when you become afraid to take risks for fear of looking stupid…I never want to do that…never be afraid to fail.
Let’s get a little political (again)…who would you Vote for President in 2008 based upon what you know, and why?
I feel if the vote DID count, I would have to think about OPRAH or AL SHARPTON; somebody that understands that the problems in society today are due to lack of love.
Cloud 9 is already on the radio here in Atlanta. Of the songs you have currently completed, what is the next song you are trying to push?
Well, you never can tell because the fans end up choosing the singles for you, especially when you are a up and coming artist. But check for “Gangsta,” “Daddy,” “Heavy Breather featuring Willie Joe and Bohagen” and “Haters featuring Wes Fif.”
Any last words?
GOODBYE! I’LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME…

B.O.B. - KEEP YOUR HEAD TO THE SKY (Part 1)
You might have heard B.O.B.’s (B. Rich, his co-manager calls him “Bob”) infectious single “Cloud 9.” I personally heard it on V-103 FM in Atlanta on Greg Street’s show. I was immediately intrigued and set out to find out more about the Decatur, Georgia artist. I tried to really pick his brain. From politics to politicking, B.O.B. is reaching for the stars. And when your aim is that high, your bound to catch a little cloud (puff, puff) here and there.
We caught up with B.O.B. while he was in Miami, FL…
How’s Miami?
Hot as hell! I’ve been down there for about a month and a half, pullin’ 30-hour workdays recordin’…I’m back in Atlanta, but I was workin’ long days, sun up to sun down. Been working with Pitbull, Pretty Ricky, and many others. Just stayin’ busy.
Let’s take it back first. How did it feel at age 14, to have a beat that you created bought by a recording artist? Your head had to be all the way in the clouds (no pun intended), right?
Well, I made the track at 15 years old and it was purchased a year later. It was for an underground hit called “Da Cookie Man.” (for Slip N Slide artist Citti). It was a good learning experience financially and music-wise. I am glad I learned early what to do and what not to do.
When I first heard Cloud 9, I was drawn to the vocal arrangements in the chorus, the harmonies. It certainly makes the song catchy and is reminiscent of Dungeon Family (Outkast, Cee-Lo, Goodie Mob) productions. How heavy of an influence were they, growing up in Decatur?
They were a very heavy influence especially with Outkast and now Gnarls Barkley. To see Cee-Lo be able to tour Europe and be from where I’m from shows that there are different options on how to obtain success.
