Kanye's 5 Year Plan...better get yours on deck!
5 short years ago that the world was barely aware of the Loius Vuitton Don, otherwise known as Mr. Kanye West; that is until exactly 5 years ago today. On October 23, 2002 Kanye West was involved in a nearly fatal car accident where he fell asleep while driving, which was a life changing event not only for West, but for the hip hop nation. Let's take a look at Kanye's 5 year plan that has brought him to the superstar status he has today.
In 2002, the West's accident proved to be the inspiration for his first single, "Through the Wire"
In 2004, West dropped his debut album, The College Drop Out, which featured songs like "Jesus Walks", "Slow Jamz", and "All Falls Down" with my Zeta soror, Syleena Johnson. This is when West's style became hugely known for sampling the oldies but goodies.
In 2005, Kanye came with his sophomore project, Late Registration, which brought us the infamous hits "Diamonds from Sierra Leon" and "Gold Digger" which featured Oscar winner Jaime Foxx. Late Registration earned West his first Grammy Award. This year, Kanye also became a fashion columnist for Complex Magazine. Along with staying a fresh face in the entertainment industry in 05, Kanye also got political this year, performing at the Live 8 and making the controversial Katrina comment, "George Bush doesn't care about black people." He also commented on homophobia in hip hop on an MTV special.
In 2007, West definitely stepped his game up with the recent release of Graduation, where he outsold his newly claimed rival 50 Cent, and sold nearly a million copies in just two short weeks. Which brings us up to date with the Don. In 5 short years, Kanye has pretty much gone from a nothing to everything; winning a number of awards, hitting all the award shows-not while being quiet or shy about winning and/or losing, got engaged to a supermodel, and has gone platinum a bunch of times over.
Kanye has a story that is definitely rich with tragedy and triumph, but even more so, if you look at where he has come since this very day in 2002, hopefully you too can get your 5 year plan right and live all of your dreams just the same.
