WHERE DOES YOUR SUPPORT LIE?
I have never been one to pull the good ol' “race card” out, nor am I usually one who takes politics very seriously, but this year is very special election for a number of reasons. We could possibly have our very first Black president, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, we could also possibly have our first female president…good year for the supposed “oppressed,” hunh?
It’s no secrets that Barack Obama is pulling out a few of the BIG names to support his campaign, like Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and even Denzel Washington, so why is it that when it comes to certain Black celebrities and/or politicians they are either undecided and/or supporting the other candidate? I initially questioned this theory after hearing that hip hop mogul Russel Simmons publicly announced that he was undecided and that he didn’t know enough about Obama to offer his support. Of course, I first thought, just look at him…that could be reason enough to offer support, but I even went further to say ok, maybe don’t pull the race card (it sure has been pulled on us enough), but at least research his views and beliefs. So now that two key politicians in South Carolina, State Senators Robert Ford and Darrell Jackson have publicly offered their support to the Hillary Clinton's campaign, it really made me stop and say, ok Black America, where does your support really lie? Just look at some of the comments that these two black men made:
"I'm a gambling man. I love Obama," Ford said. "But I'm not going to kill myself."
"It's a slim possibility for him to get the nomination, but then everybody else is doomed," Ford said. "Every Democrat running on that ticket next year would lose — because he's black and he's top of the ticket. We'd lose the House and the Senate and the governors and everything."
Wow! Looks like I’m the only one NOT trying to really play the race card, but when it really comes down to it, I’m going to support what I know! I’m not saying that Obama is the better candidate, but before I disapprove, I’d rather offer support and assistance as to how his campaign could improve, as opposed to going with who the “world” sees as a better fit. Remember, UNITED WE STAND AND DIVIDED WE FALL! Ponder on that!!!
