According to the Associated Press, it's official: Jay-Z aka Shawn Carter, who for the past 3 years has presided over Universal Music Group's Def Jam Records, will step down effective December 31st.
He will continue to release new music via his label Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Records after his presidency ends. Jay-Z said it is "time for me to take on new challenges." He was appointed in December 2004 after the departure of Lyor Cohen, who left to preside over Warner Music Group.
Rumors of Jay's departure began months ago, where it was suggested he would be leaving "the house that Russell built" to move to Columbia Records to strengthen their urban music just as he brought Ne-Yo and Rihanna, now both platinum-selling artists, to Def Jam.
More on this to come...
